Description of 1966 NCAA Championship Texas Western vs. Kentucky DVD
On March 19, 1966, Texas Western College, now known as the
University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), put an all-black starting five on
the floor for the first time in an NCAA basketball championship. That
night the Texas Western Miners, led by coach Don Haskins with star
players David Lattin and Bobby Joe Hill, defeated coach Adolph Rupp?s
#1 ranked all-white Kentucky Wildcats, 72-65.
Lattin set the tone early with a thunderous dunk, highlighting the
strength of the Miners, while Hill?s back to back steals showed their
quickness. Other key players for the miners included Harry Flourney,
Willie Cager, Willie Worsley and Nevil Shed. The Kentucky Wildcats
featured Pat Riley, Louis Dampier and Larry Conley.
