Michigan vs. Seton Hall
April 3, 1989 ? Seattle, Washington
The Kingdome in Seattle, Washington played host to the 1989 NCAA National Championship game on the evening
of April 3rd. This battle was a clash of two #3 seeds, the Michigan Wolverines from the mid-west region and the
Seton Hall Pirates from the west region. The match-up was one of firsts, as it was the first title game appearance
for both Michigan and Seton Hall, and would eventually become the first national championship for the University
of Michigan and their head coach, Steve Fisher. The Wolverines were able to hold off a scrappy and
determined Seton Hall team to claim the national title. It took an overtime effort to finally put away the Pirates, but
the Wolverines, led by Glen Rice, eventually prevailed by a slim 80-79 margin. Glen Rice was named the tournament?s
Most Outstanding Player, as he netted 184 total tournament points in leading his Wolverines to their first national title.
Both teams had to defeat two Final Four veterans, the Illinois Fightin Illini and the Duke Blue Devils to earn their
shot at the national title.
